Maximising functionality in minimal spaces

Questioning what is needed to live comfortably in a limited space within a megacity, Nina Tolstrup of Studiomama has converted a former minicab office in Islington, north London, into a micro-apartment that encompasses only 13 square metres. Designed with multifunctionality in mind, the modest space exploits every square centimetre. Through cleverly designed transformable settings, all the typical aspects of a regularly proportioned apartment are provided, but in a compact package. The space reconfigures to create a sleeping area, a workspace, a lounge, a kitchen, a bathroom, closets and a dining area. To avoid compromising the aesthetic appeal of the limited dimensions, sliding doors hide unsightly storage and the bed folds away to create additional floor space.
